5 Best Water Filters

As any prepper will tell you, water ranks the top three necessities. They drill this fact into you, “you can survive up to three weeks without food, but only three days without water”. This requirment is such a priority, books have been created for water alone. No surprise considering the human body is about 60-70% water by weight.

Books, discussion forums and tutorials are dedicated for harvesting, treating and storing this precious requirement. The use of sand, rocks, charcoal, chlorination, and boiling water is a given.

According to Utah University a family of four requires 270 gallons of water for a three month supply. Trudging through the media, one can be overwhelmed with the information.

So what are the 5 best water filters?

Before we dive in, let’s define water filtration.

What is water filtration?

Water filtration can be defined as filtration system or process that is used to filter out particles and/or pollutants from water.  This process can include but not limited to activated carbon filters, UV light units, reverse osmosis, and water distillers.

For the prepper, it is best to have more than one process ready. The process used will be dependent on the current environment and scenario one finds themselves in. Additionally, time and quantity of water being filtered depends on the process used.

So here’s the list of 5 Best Water Filters:

Best water filters: swayer vs lifestraw1) Sawyer Mini

While a close race with the LifeStraw, the specs provide the facts. Versatility, more gallons filtered cleaner than bottled water, the Sawyer mini ranks high for the individual use on the go.

2) Berkey Light Water Filter

One can barely check a prepper website, without seeing the ad links for this filter. Each Berkey element is designed to produce 3000 gallons of clean safe water. The standard Berkey Light comes with two Black Berkey elements or the capability to produce 6000 gallons of water. You can get a recent test result here

3) Sawyer Point Zero Two purifier

You can find these with the bucket adapter. While the Berkey elements are surperb, the Sawyer Point Zero Two Purifier offers an impressive list of filtration.  Additionally the device can pump out an amazing 1 liter per minute with gravity.

4) Platypus GravityWorks

Delivering four liters of filtered water is just 2.5 minutes with no pumping, there’s simply no easier or faster way to get safe water away from home. The Platypus provides 8L capacity.

The MSR water filter’s lever-action pumps water on both up and down strokes for a fast 1.25-liters-per-minute flow rate, and the filter eliminates 99.99% of all waterborne bacteria and common protozoan parasites like giardia and
cryptosporidia.
